Missing child found : Fairfax County, Va

Missing man : Saginaw, Michigan

ERIC FRANKS 39, SAGINAW, MICHIGAN 03/21/11
BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -
The Buena Vista Township Police Department is investigating a case of missing persons that stretches back to 2011.

Authorities said in November, the family of Eric Franks filed a missing report with the Archbold Police Department in Ohio, because Franks had not been seen or heard from for several months.

Investigators learned that Franks went to Saginaw, MI, and met with an estranged girlfriend who is the mother of Franks' child. Franks checked into the Miller Motel in Bridgeport sometime in late 2010 and stayed for about five months.

Police said Franks then checked out on March 21, 2011, and has not been seen or heard from since.

Buena Vista police became involved in the investigation in December, after learning Franks had regular contacts with the mother of Franks' child. Detectives interviewed the woman on several occasions and she stated she last saw Franks on March 21, 2011, when they parted ways from the motel heading south on Dixie Highway. She has not heard from him since.

At this time, detectives have not been able to establish any wrong-doing but do suspect something happened to Franks and believe he may be dead.

Police said Franks is a 39-year-old white man, standing 6'1" and weighing about 175 pounds.

Investigators said Franks was last seen driving a tan four-door 2001 Chevy Malibu with Ohio registration EMH4902.

Anyone with information about Franks' whereabouts is asked to call the Buena Vista Police Detective Bureau at 989-233-2363.

Former chief, genealogist continue trying to identify body

Former chief, genealogist continue trying to identify body

Friday, September 28, 2012
Photos by DON HIMSEL, Staff Photographer

Despite the best of intentions, anniversaries often slip one’s mind, with the cares and concerns of everyday life taking precedence.
There is one anniversary that former Bedford Police Chief David C. Bailey will never forget, in part because he is reminded of it in his daily routines.
The date in question is Oct. 6, 1971, when the body of a woman in her 30s was discovered in the woods near what is now the Kilton Road exit and onramp on Route 101 West.
“I think of it every time I drive up that ramp,” Bailey said.
Although Bailey had been a police officer for less than six months when the Jane Doe was found, his memories of visiting the site remain vivid. It had been a very hot September, which speeded the decomposition of the body.
“When I look at those pictures, I can still smell it,” Bailey said of the photographs of the crime scene. “I’ll never forget that smell.”
Though he was not a main investigator in the case, Bailey said he followed its progress. Forty-one years later and into his retirement, it continues to hold his attention.
“It’s one of the two cases that until I make some progress on, I won’t consider myself actively retired,” he said, noting that he still works as a special police officer.
The driving force behind his focus on the oldest Jane Doe case in the state, Bailey said, is forensic genealogist and Bedford resident Melinde Byrne.
Byrne began working on the case in November 2008, when she was asked to teach a class on forensic genealogy at Boston University.
Forensic genealogy, she said, is “the study of kinship and identity as it pertains to the law.”
Byrne selected three cases to present to her students, one of which she wanted to be an unresolved case. She chose the Bedford Jane Doe because, living a few miles away from where the body was discovered, it literally hit close to home.
Byrne said she was horrified that this woman “could vanish and no one could come forward to claim her.”
The next step, she said, was contacting Bailey, who was Bedford’s police chief at the time, to obtain additional information and to offer her assistance as a forensic genealogist.
“It took me months, literally, to approach Chief Bailey,” Byrne said, explaining that she wanted to be particularly respectful since she wasn’t affiliated with the law enforcement or military communities.
Given how well her partnership with Bailey has worked out, she said, “I must have done something right.”
Since teaching her first forensic genealogy class in 2008, Byrne has presented the mystery of the Bedford Jane Doe to about 500 students. She will share the case with a new class in November.
“The students come up with something new every time,” she said.
There are many fascinating details that can’t be revealed publicly without jeopardizing the outcome of the case, she said, and they have a good amount of information to go on.
Because they do not have a good sample of Jane Doe’s DNA just yet, much of the investigatory work they have done so far depends upon reverse engineering, Byrne explained.
“The most common use of forensic genealogy is to locate missing heirs to estates,” she said. “These are cases where you know somebody’s name and you determine who that name actually belongs to.”
In other cases, “you may not know the person’s last name, but you know what their place in a kinship group is,” Byrne said. “It’s sort of like an algebra problem. You know two pieces of the formula, and you get the answer by using those two pieces.”
Since at this time, Jane Doe lacks both a family name and a designated place in a kinship group, the equation is more challenging.
“What I’m trying to reverse-engineer is sort of like the dog that didn’t bark in the night,” Byrne said. “I’m going to use the clues we have in a different way.”
One example Byrne was able to discuss was Jane Doe’s clothing.
“There are a lot of things that point to Canada as an origin,” she said. “She’s wearing a Wonderbra, which was not sold in the United States in 1971. She also has Gossard panties on.”
Then, there are the heels on Jane Doe’s sandals, Byrne noted, the height of which is marked in centimeters.
Byrne cautioned against using Jane Doe’s clothing as the entire basis for her place of origin, as the woman could have borrowed the clothing from someone else or gone shopping in Canada. Such clues, however, can provide a jumping-off point for further investigation.
Another important piece of the equation is why Jane Doe was never reported missing.
“There’s a whole series of obligations,” Byrne said, from personal and work relationships to missed medical or dental appointments, that would result in someone knowing if a person had gone missing.
“It is a pretty baffling dead-end kind of thing,” she said of the case, noting that being able to narrow it down geographically will help their progress.
At this time, Bailey said, the Bedford Police Department does not have an active investigation on the Jane Doe case.
“You go by solvability,” he said of cold cases. “They review them on occasion,” and if additional information surfaces regarding a case, they’ll work on it.
In the meantime, Bailey and Byrne will continue to dig, hoping to find a new interpretation of a clue or a new connection that will lead them closer to the identity of Jane Doe.
The nature of her demise is not the main focus here, Bailey explained.
“This is about giving this person closure,” he said. “It just boggles the mind that no one knows who she is.”

Missing woman - Mississippi

From Picuayne, Mississippi Since September 17, 2012 Please Help Find Brailynne Corr

Brailynne Corr graduated from Ridgeview High in 2008, recently graduated from UCF and is now missing from Mississippi.

She went to live with her parents in Mississippi and started a job a month ago at a hospital in Jackson. She's been missing now for 10 days.

One Jacksonville family who has known her since childhood is trying to help find her from their home here on the First Coast.

Lou Anne McCormick has spent hours on Facebook of late, trying to spread the word about Corr.

Brailynne and her daughter Mallory were friends throughout elementary and junior high in Orange Park. They continued to keep in touch.

"I can't imagine what she is going through right now, my daughter's friend, I just want to help the family," said McCormick.

McCormick has been in touch with Corr's father in Mississippi, Dave Corr.

"He is just distraught, driving on the roads of Mississippi looking for her."

Corr told First Coast news that he has gone to several places in Mississippi where his daughter was known to be, but he has had no luck finding her.

McCormick convinced him to open an account at Regions Bank in Brandon, Mississippi. She wants to raise money through Facebook to help the family hire a private investigator.

"I thought what would I do, I would hire someone besides local police to help me find my daughter, that's how I'd go about it."

Corr told her parents she was going to Hattiesburg, Mississippi on September 15th to visit friends. While she did go to Hattiesburg, she did not visit anyone.

She was last seen two days later on the 17th at a Walmart in Picuayne, Miss., 3 hours away.

"She'd gone to Walmart, gone in bought gum, then bought gas and went inside again to get bottled water," said McCormick.
That was 10 days ago.

No signs of her since, no evidence of using her credit card.

"A really good girl about checking in with Mom and Dad constantly, totally out of character for her," McCormick remarked.

She and her daughter, Mallory Williams, plan to pass out posters in the Orange Park area in hopes of getting some clues to Corr's whereabouts.

"If we put out the posters and she did communicate with someone in the Orange Park area, anyone prior to going missing, they may have some idea where she might be."

Her father asks that if anyone happens to see her in the area, to stop her and call authorities, likewise if they happen to hear from Corr.

Brandon Rogers is a UNF student who dated Corr for several years. He has started the Facebook page "Find Brailynne"

He's concerned also, saying this is not like her, describing her as a very smart girl, graduating with a degree in molecular science and microbiology.

Detective Chris Ainsworth in Mississippi said she is on the National Missing Persons List, but at this point he has no solid reason to suspect foul play.

Missing Woman - Leesport, Pennsylvania

From Leesport, Pennsylvania Since September 18, 2012 Please Help Find Rebecca Mertz

After six days of intensive efforts, officials Sunday ended their search of an area near Lake Ontelaunee for a woman who has been missing since last week. Northern Berks Regional police have been on the scene daily since Rebecca Mertz, 31, of Blandon was reported missing by her family on Tuesday. As of Sunday night, investigators had found nothing.

"The police department is assuming a position of a passive nature at this point," Sgt. Ronald Mohl said. "We are not going to be conducting any active searches unless something of significance or concrete evidence would arrive."

Members of the Reading Fire Department Scuba Rescue Team and the Schuylkill Haven Scuba Team searched the lake for several hours Sunday afternoon.

"We had an extensive sonar search done and divers in the water did not find anything," Mohl said.

While Saturday's search included the help of about 140 volunteers in the wooded area around the lake, Sunday's was strictly by professional teams.

Mohl said the Schuylkill Haven team has found most of the people who have drowned in Blue Marsh Lake, adding that it and high-caliber equipment and expert personnel.

He said that the sonar used Sunday can pinpoint a lot of small objects and a person's body. The divers focused mainly on the area by the closed bridge at West Shore Drive. Mertz's abandoned vehicle was found near the bridge Tuesday.

During Saturday's search, some of the K-9 units showed interest in the area, but Mohl said it could have just been that Mertz brushed up against the bridge or walked across it.

Mohl said Mertz was seen at American House in Leesport last Monday night into early Tuesday. She left the bar, went to a residence about a half-block away and stayed there until about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, he said.

Mohl said Mertz's family received a troubling text message from her at 9:19 a.m. Tuesday. Someone called Mertz to find out what was going on and she said she was hanging out at the lake, Mohl said. Mertz told the caller that she called into work and said she was running late. She said she had a rough night and was going to get some rest.

"It was nothing unusual," Mohl said. "They said she was very familiar with the lake."

After the family reported she was missing Tuesday, Mohl said Mertz was entered into the national database for missing persons. Her information will remain in the system and Mohl said investigators will continue to monitor Facebook and other social networks for any signs of her.

The active searches around Lake Ontelaunee, however, are over.

"I think we covered that over the last five days," Mohl said. "We concentrated a search of that whole area. There is always a possibility she walked away and chose to go missing."

If you have any information, you're asked to call (610) 926-1787.

Benjamin Orest Kravetz, 61, of Evansburg was found shot to death in the Lobstick River northwest of Evansburh on September 22, 2012. RCMP are now investigating his homicide.

RCMP are investigating a homicide after the body of an Evansburg man missing for more than two weeks was pulled from the Lobstick River.
An autopsy confirmed Benjamin Orest Kravetz, 61, was shot to death, RCMP said Thursday. Police recovered his body from the river, northwest of Evansburg, last Saturday.
Kravetz was last seen the evening of Sept. 9, when he left home to visit a friend’s nearby home, but failed to show up. His vehicle was found near the CN tracks in the area, but the licence plate was removed and is still missing, said Staff Sgt. Shawn LeMay, spokesman for RCMP K Division. The missing plate is WJX 952. Police continue to examine the vehicle for evidence.
Kravetz’s black Rottweiler-cross dog, Daisy, had been with him when he left his home. It was later found at a farm in the area, sometime before Kravetz’s body was pulled from the river, LeMay said.
LeMay wouldn’t comment on whether RCMP suspected Kravetz had met with foul play during the weeks he was missing.
No suspects have been identified.
Evansburg is about 100 kilometres west of Edmonton.
